ABOUT KATIE FORBES Katie Forbes is a self-taught, award-winning digital photographer based in Columbus, Ohio. Katie’s body of work is reflective of her deep interest and respect for cultural studies, often describing her work as ethnophotography.
Forbes' growing portfolio includes images that are both heartbreaking and hopeful, and she’s photographed a majority of the key local figures at the forefront of the modern social justice movement, including late activists Amber Evans and Rubén Castilla Herrera. She also captured the first images of the right wing protesters who stationed themselves outside of former Ohio health director Dr. Amy Acton's Bexley home; those photos soon went viral, Forbes' pictures making their way into The Washington Post and on-air with "The Today Show." Katie continues to work with the social justice movement leaders and political figures in Ohio, while also pursuing interests in astro and nature photography. Her work can be followed at www.KRForbesPhotography.com and on social media under the name KRForbesPhotography. |
ABOUT THE SHOW Henry Green IV. Kareem Ali Nadir Jones. Ty’Re King. Jaron Thomas. Donna Dalton. Julius Tate Jr. Casey Goodson Jr. Andre Hill. Ma’Khia Bryant. Donovan Lewis.
These are just some of the nearly 50 community members whose lives were ended by the Columbus Police Department since 2013. *policescorecard.org I began documenting the protests of these unadjudicated killings in 2016. The images I have collected over the past six years represent the complicated and never-ending grief process that results from unchecked police violence in our community. Gathering these images through the years has taken an emotional toll on me as an observer and concerned citizen. I am in awe of the tireless efforts of our Columbus community leaders including People’s Justice Project (PJP), Black Queer & Intersectional Collective (BQIC), Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ), Black Abolitionist Collective (BACO), and many more, who have dedicated their lives to fighting for justice, sacrificing much of themselves emotionally and physically along the way. This exhibition is an expression of my gratitude to those fighting to make our world safer and my recognition of the strength and tenacity of those who have been forced into this fight, by the loss of their family members at the hands of an unjust system. In the words of senator John Lewis, “A democracy cannot thrive where power remains unchecked and justice is reserved for a select few. Ignoring these cries and failing to respond to this movement is simply not an option — for peace cannot exist where justice is not served.” Instagram: @kforbesphotography Website: krforbesphotography.com |
